Hi, Friend! I'm Christopher
I started The Better World Company after a search for ways to reduce my plastic consumption came up empty. I was frustrated that alternatives to the wasteful “Buy – Use – Toss” model were either way too expensive, ineffective, or just too time-consuming. Now I’m finding ways to bring you high-quality, low-impact products without all the plastic packaging, while still providing you with convenience and affordability. I want to keep it real and keep you happy, so if you’ve got an idea or product suggestion feel free to drop me a line here.
What's the big deal?
Nearly 500 million metric tons of plastic is now produced every year. Close to half is single-use; it’s used just once and thrown away. Annual production and incineration of plastic emits the same amount of greenhouse gases as almost 200 coal-fired power plants or the total energy usage of 100 million U.S. homes.
Around the world we’re buying 20,000 plastic bottles per second. That’s almost 1 million every minute, and close to half a trillion (500,000,000,000!) every year. Collection and recycling efforts just can’t keep up – only 14% of plastic packaging gets made into something else, and much of the rest winds up in our rivers and oceans.
Many scientists say plastic NEVER breaks down, but instead just becomes smaller and smaller pieces known as microplastics. What we do know for sure is that this plastic absorbs and transports toxins as it invades every corner of the earth, chokes out all types of marine life, and enters our bodies through the air we breathe, the food we eat, and the water we drink. BUT THERE’S HOPE…
How Did We Get Here?
In the Spring of 2017 I watched a documentary called ‘A Plastic Ocean’. The film is amazing, and anything I say here won’t do it justice, so just go watch it. No big secret on the storyline: Humans produce an astounding amount of plastic. More than we know what to do with. It has to go somewhere, and since everything rolls downhill the ocean becomes a very popular destination. The experience was powerful; it left me inspired to change my habits and reduce my personal plastic consumption. I think it will do the same for you.
