About Us

Howdy Neighbor! I'm Christopher.

You may have seen me around the neighborhood, perhaps with that crazy doggo out for a stroll. Say ‘Hi’ next time, I’d love to meet you! I started The Better World Company after a search for ways to reduce my plastic consumption came up empty. I’m frustrated that alternatives to the wasteful “Buy – Use – Toss” model are either way too expensive or time-consuming, so I’m finding ways to bring you high-quality, low-impact products without all the plastic packaging, while still providing convenience and affordability. I want to keep it real and keep it local, so if you’ve got an idea or product suggestion drop me a line here.

What's the big deal?

Over 400 million metric tons of plastic will be produced in 2019. Almost half is single-use; it’s used just once and thrown away. The production and incineration of plastic in 2019 will emit the same amount of greenhouse gases as 189 coal-fired power plants or the total energy usage of 100 million U.S. homes.

Around the world we’re buying 20,000 plastic bottles per second. That’s almost 1 million every minute, and close to half a trillion (500,000,000,000!) every year. Collection and recycling efforts just can’t keep up–only 14% of plastic packaging gets made into something else, and much of it winds up in our oceans.

Many scientists say plastic NEVER breaks down, but instead just becomes smaller and smaller pieces known as microplastic. What we do know for sure is that this plastic absorbs and transports toxins as it pollutes our water and is eaten by all types of marine life (and eventually by you and I). BUT THERE’S HOPE…

How did we get here?

How did we get here?

In the Spring of 2017 I watched a documentary called ‘A Plastic Ocean’.  The film is amazing, and anything I say here won’t do it justice, so just go watch it.  No big secret on the storyline: Humans produce an astounding amount of plastic. More than we know what to do with. It has to go somewhere, and since everything rolls downhill the ocean becomes a very popular destination. The experience was powerful; it left me inspired to change my habits and reduce my personal plastic consumption. I think it will do the same for you.

“NO MORE SINGLE-USE PLASTICS!”, I shouted from the (metaphorical) mountaintop. But I was soon met with a huge obstacle – most of the products we bought in stores or online were only sold in plastic packaging.  There were no alternatives; at least none that were economical or convenient enough for a family like ours. I, as an individual, felt powerless to make the change that I so desperately desired.

I needed to think bigger.  What if I brought enough people along for the ride so that we could actually reshape the supply chain into a circular, zero-waste model? The Better World Company was born. We’re here to help end the wasteful stream of single-use plastic while providing convenient, automated home delivery of environmentally friendly household products - made locally whenever possible - that look great and perform even better.

We’re starting small, with a focused offering of high-quality products that most people use regularly and a delivery area that allows for efficiency and top-notch customer service. We want to build this the right way, with the right products, and with the right people (like you!). Let us know if there’s a product or brand you absolutely love.  We’ll check it out and see if we can bring you even more great products. You can help us grow by telling your friends, neighbors, and co-workers about what we do. We’ll come to other neighborhoods or offices when enough people tell us to.

We’re thrilled you’ve decided to join us on this journey. Thank you for making ours a Better World!
